Call to action: from Mali, across the world, and on to the United Nations

Over 3000 young people are infected with HIV every day. Only 1 in 3 young people have full knowledge of how HIV is transmitted.

With world leaders meeting on the subject of AIDS at the United Nations headquarters in New York on 10 June 2011. The global youth movement, What about HIV? founded in Mali at the Global Youth Summit on HIV/AIDS is calling for world leaders and heads of government to implement their Call to Action.

As a relatively young person living with HIV right here in the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland, I feel it is important for me to have joined their call – so I have signed up here. Please consider doing so yourself.

Don’t forget that here in Belfast you can make a difference to people right across Northern Ireland who live with HIV by donating to The HIV Support Centre which is now in its 25th year here in the city of Belfast

gather for peace, democracy and justice

I will be attending the assembly at Belfast City Hall at 1pm on Wednesday 6th April 2011 to show my abhorrence of the murder of PSNI Constable Ronan Kerr. The assembly is being organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions Northern Ireland. I urge all members of the public to attend and let us all stand firm to show those responsible for Saturday’s atrocity and the many recent and ongoing security alerts across Northern Ireland that they are acting not in our name. Letter from Peter Bunting, Acting General Secretary, ICTU NI Dear Colleagues Following the brutal murder of … Continue reading gather for peace, democracy and justice

Titanic sinks again – but this time in Belfast itself

This time, not the ship – but a Scottish Country Dance that was being danced at the St Patrick’s dance and ceilidh in St John’s Church Hall on the Castlereagh Road, Belfast this evening. The dance was taxing even those of us who have been dancing quite some time. We were put over it by the deviser, and only as we were about to dance it did we find out that it was not in Strathspey time (as we had initially thought having been told to Petronella) but in Reel time. Double the speed of the Strathspey then… And then … Continue reading Titanic sinks again – but this time in Belfast itself

PSNI block entrance to All Souls’ Church: to go to Starbucks!

Questionable parking from a police constable in Belfast – blocking entrance to a church car park with fewer than ten minutes to go before the Sunday morning service was due. Surely there are more places to park? Continue reading PSNI block entrance to All Souls’ Church: to go to Starbucks!

will the Irish FA play teams in Homophobia v Football?

Shirt badge/Association crest

Following sectarian incidents at the Northern Ireland v Scotland match in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin recently, the Irish FA has said that

Information has now come to light which has provided the name of one of those involved. The Association will now seek to confirm the identity of this individual. If their identity is confirmed, the Irish FA will place a life time ban on this person from receiving tickets to all Northern Ireland home and away games.

I reiterate my hope that they will do this for any homophobic chanting at football matches under its control.

Let's hope the Irish FA joins in the International Day against homophobia in football.

Today is 19 February 2011 and is the second international day opposing homophobia in football. Continue reading “will the Irish FA play teams in Homophobia v Football?”

Botanic signage – further update

Having waited over three months since the last communication from Roads Service concerning the signage in Botanic Avenue, I have written back to Mr Conall McKee seeking clarification of where they have got in their review process. It seems incredible that nothing appears to have been done. I will continue to press Roads Service on this issue. crossposted from Michael Carchrie Campbell Continue reading Botanic signage – further update

UFOs observed in Queen’s Quarter

Updated on 13 March 2011 – thanks to Conor Prendergast

Last night, whilst most of Northern Ireland’s political bloggers were finding out about the stars of the Slugger Awards in the Cathedral Quarter of the city, some 50 or 60 people were observing UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects), aliens, planets, and stars in the Queen’s Quarter.

There was, however, some connexion between what was happening in Hill Street and in Elmwood Avenue. Three of the four of us that had been involved with the Hammering Out of the Slugger Awards were actually in one location and not the other. Guess which three and in which location we were to be found. Continue reading “UFOs observed in Queen’s Quarter”
