Christ completes the whole of Revelation

The Second Vatican Council in session.

God, who creates and maintains all things by his Word, provides men with constant evidence of himself in created realities. And furthermore, wishing to open up the way to heavenly salvation, he manifested himself to our first parents from the very beginning. After the fall, he buoyed them up with the hope of salvation, by promising redemption; and he has never ceased to take care of the human race. For he wishes to give eternal life to all those who seek salvation by patience in well-doing. In his own time God called Abraham, and made him into a great nation. After the era of the patriarchs, he taught this nation, by Moses and the prophets, to recognise him as the only living and true God, as a provident father and just judge. He taught them, too, to look for the promised Saviour. And so, throughout the ages, he prepared the way for the Gospel. Continue reading “Christ completes the whole of Revelation”

the clergy today should be wearing pink…

Today is the second day this year that the clergy ought to be wearing pink at Mass. That is the vestments are meant to be rose coloured. This is what happens during Lent on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Lent, and today, Gaudete Sunday – the third Sunday of Advent.

Third Sunday of Advent

On this day the Church urges us to gladness in the middle of this time of expectation and penitence: the coming of Jesus approaches more and more. St. John, the holy precursor, announces to the Jews the coming of the Savior. “The Savior,” he says to them, “lives already among us, though unknown. He will soon appear openly.” Now is the time for fervent prayers and for imploring Jesus to remain with us by His mercy. Let us prepare the way for Him by repentance and by a worthy reception of the Sacraments. All the prayers of this Mass are filled with that which the Church wishes our souls to be possessed at the approach of the Savior.* Continue reading “the clergy today should be wearing pink…”

what’s going on? Today, saw the consolidation of three blogs. To all readers of Gyronny Herald, please bear with us as we integrated positive hivblogger and Hiberno Catholic into this site. The archives of the other blogs will continue to exist online but will cease to be updated. In future, posts will be made on Gyronny Herald in order to widen the content further. Why consolidate? After my post on World Aids Day 2010, and my abandonment of anonymity on the positive hivblogger site, it was clear to me that at some point in the near future the posts that are written … Continue reading and three became one

Of Gods and Men

I look forward to the being able to watch the French film Of Gods and Men at Queen’s Film Theatre, Belfast during the week beginning 31 December 2010 (according to Artificial Eye).

Seven French Cistercian monks were kidnapped and then killed at Tibhirine in Algeria, amidst rising religious and factional violence. Their murderers were never found.

“When it happened, as a nation, France was shocked,” says the film’s producer Etienne Comar. Continue reading “Of Gods and Men”

either a farce or we’ve moved very far indeed

Reading the news about the First Minister’s comments about integrated education in Northern Ireland has got me thinking. It really isn’t that long ago since I spoke in a debate, nay, I seconded the motion, at Alliance Party Conference in the Dunadry Hotel, in 2009. The motion was proposed by Alliance Youth, – I was only just a member back then (before being kicked out for being too old). The proposal was that the State should withdraw funding from schools that don’t withdraw religious control on them. In other words, to create a State education sector that was truly integrated, … Continue reading either a farce or we’ve moved very far indeed

Who is like God?

St Michael, Archangel St Michael is mentioned three times in Holy Scripture. In the book of Daniel (chapters 10, 12) he is the protector and liberator of God’s people: Michael, that high lord who is guardian of thy race. Daniel 12.1 Judas Thaddeus repeats the legend of his strife with the devil for … Continue reading Who is like God?

the powers God gives to men

Tuesday of the Eighteenth Week after Pentecost

The crowds that witnessed the healing of the man with the palsy

were filled with awe at seeing it, and praised God for giving such powers to men.

St Matthew 9.8

How much more should we not glorify God, we who know that the miracle was performed, not by a man, but by a God, who is still living and working among us by his Sacraments and the power he has given his priests?

A man sick of the palsy, impotent in body, more impotent in soul, enchained by sin, hears that Jesus has returned to Capharnaum. For some time, he has been longing to meet him, and now he knows where to find him he implores his friends to carry him to the feet of the Miracle-worker.

Jesus had already seen him and loved him just because he was helpless; it is for the sick and the impotent that he has come down to earth; what need of a physician have those who are in full health?

Jesus has but one desire: to go about doing good. He became man, not to extinguish but to inflame the smoking flax, to ment the broken reed, to set the prisoner free, to announce liberty to the oppressed, and to bring about his Father’s year of grace, when he, the Lamb of God, willhave taken away the sins of the world. For that his Father sent him; for that he thirsts, because it is the divine will that he should bring freedom and grace to all those who hope in the Lord.

Therefore Jesus rejoices when he sees this man come, in his time of need, to him who can make him rich. He bends over him and bids him take courage; is not all well with those to whom Jesus whispers, Continue reading “the powers God gives to men”
