updated: FIFA wants LGBT fans to put themselves at risk

Post updated§

The FIFA World Cup is not coming to England. No, it is going to Russia in 2018, and to Qatar in 2022? Is there much for me to celebrate in this?

Let’s look at Russia?

ILGA-Europe’s Annual Conference adopted a declaration against homophobic/transphobic attack in Russia

Declaration of the 14th ILGA-Europe conference with regard to attack on LGBT activists in Russia*

On October 30, in Tomsk three activists of the local branch of the Russian LGBT Network were attacked while disctributing leaflets to people in the streets with the call or tolerance toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. They were attacked by a group of nine people in the masks. In the results of harsh beating all three activists were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. We draw a particular attention to the fact that the attack took place very close to the police station, but the police officers did not interfere. wear purple on 20 October

I’ve been invited to the Wear Purple event on 20 October in memory of the gay teens who have killed themselves due to homophobic abuse. It may not do much, but hopefully some will notice. It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes and at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that … Continue reading wear purple on 20 October

Tom Elliott and the UUP need to grow up

So it seems that we are not going to see the leader of the Ulster Unionists in next year’s Belfast Pride march. As reported by Pink News, Tom Elliott MLA recently said that I have indicated at party meetings that whilst some members of our party would go to gay pride marches or GAA matches, I wouldn’t go. Personally, I am not surprised at the UUP’s decision to vote in Mr Elliott as party leader. Basil McCrea his opponent has been very good at attending Belfast Pride in recent years, particularly with his colleague John McCallister. It is clear that … Continue reading Tom Elliott and the UUP need to grow up

‘six hundred of the men who got sick and died were young and fellow Catholics’

I didn’t think that I would be posting quite as quickly after the last post – but reading what I have just read really makes me want to make sure others get to read what Fr Bernard Lynch said at a rally in London today. As someone living with HIV, Fr Lynch’s words somewhat grabbed hold of me. Fortunately, we can now live with HIV – it is no longer the death sentence it once was. Here is a wordle followed by the full text… Dear Holy Father, Welcome to the United Kingdom. I am one of your fellow priests … Continue reading ‘six hundred of the men who got sick and died were young and fellow Catholics’

love between two persons… is to be treasured and respected

The word ‘love’ must never be thought of as synonymous with the word ‘sex’. Love can take many forms…love between two persons, whether of the same sex or of a different sex, is to be treasured and respected. - Dom Basil, Cardinal Hume 1923 - 1999

It’s funny what you find on the internet about yourself…

This morning when I was surfing, I found two disturbing threads on two particularly disturbing forums. One was really a repost of the other.

To quote someone hiding behind the name of “Credo”, on one of the sites

10 reasons why gay marriage is wrong

I found this on Facebook and thought that it should be posted here

  1. Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.
  2. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
  3. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.
  4. Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn’t changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can’t marry whites, and divorce is still illegal. Continue reading “10 reasons why gay marriage is wrong”

Rainbow’s report shows 60% of incidents not reported

Today, The Rainbow Project is launching a report that shows that gay people who are attacked because of their sexuality are still reluctant to report them to the Police Service of Northern Ireland. The research was carried out by John O’Doherty, Equality Officer with The Rainbow Project, following their commission by the PSNI. According to the research, more than 60% of homophobic incidents in the last three years were not reported. I know that the police do try to reach out to the LGBT community in various ways: they are nearly always at Belfast Pride Festival in the summer, as … Continue reading Rainbow’s report shows 60% of incidents not reported

PPS decision on Robinson a scandal

Belfast Pride and the Northern Ireland Gay Rights Association today described as “a scandal” the decision of the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) not to recommend a Police Service of Northern Ireland investigation into homophobic comments made by the Member of Parliament for Strangford. Chair of Belfast Pride, Andy Thompson, said: “We are outraged and offended, though not surprised, that the PPS has decided not to recommend an investigation into the odious comments made by the First Minister’s wife. “In any other part of the United Kingdom, or had Mrs Peter Robinson made comparable assertions about any other minority group, we … Continue reading PPS decision on Robinson a scandal
