Marriage equality – at step in the right direction in Oxford

With Belfast City Council voting in favour of equal rights with regard to marriage in the city of Belfast, it was refreshing to read a statement from the Chaplain of Pembroke College, Oxford: Civil Partnerships and Pembroke College Chapel The Governing Body and chaplain are dedicated to the mission of the chapel as fully including the whole college community, past and present, staff, students, and fellows. Same sex couples are most welcome to approach the chaplain with regard to preparation, celebration, and prayers when entering a Civil Partnership and for continuing support and counsel within their relationship as any other … Continue reading Marriage equality – at step in the right direction in Oxford

Join the Revolution and make your area better

Back in 1844 those who founded the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers would probably be surprised at how wide their ideas have spread. Within ten years of the opening of that first Co-operative shop which sold a very meagre selection of butter, sugar, flour, oatmeal and a few candles and later tea and tobacco there were nearly a thousand co-operatives operating in the Britain. The Rochdale Pioneers produced the Rochdale Principles which the Co-operative Society continues to uphold. As a resident of Oxford for a number of years, I know the number of bicycles left abandoned in and around the … Continue reading Join the Revolution and make your area better

State Visit of Sovereign Pontiff to UK: truly an historic opportunity not to be missed

This week sees a truly historic event taking place in the United Kingdom. For the first time since long before the Reformation National Apostasy, the Sovereign Pontiff will beatify an Englishman who is not a martyr. The Englishman in question is The Venerable (soon to be The Blessed) John Henry, Cardinal Newman, Cong. Orat.. For reference, the last Englishman so canonised was St Thomas of Hereford, canonised by John XXII in 1320. The election of His Eminence Joseph, Cardinal Ratzinger (as he then was) as Pope Benedict ⅩⅥ was met with great rejoicing in the Oxford Oratory. Little did we … Continue reading State Visit of Sovereign Pontiff to UK: truly an historic opportunity not to be missed

oxford shows off 16th century ‘video nasty’

I was fortunate to be on a guided tour of the Christ Church Picture Gallery, where my good friend John Whitehead was on duty, yesterday afternoon. Although it was free, and there were plenty of tourists in the city as a result of  St Giles’ Fair, I was the only person on the tour. This made for a very interesting afternoon, hearing about all sorts of paintings, and seeing some particularly gruesome images. Continue reading “oxford shows off 16th century ‘video nasty’”

And he’s been sighted again

Older readers will remember the posting about the elevation of a certain humble priest in the Eternal city to being a Monsignor (News from Oxford). Correspondents from England have informed me of the return to England of this well known cleric. It is said that his return has not been unnoticed by some of his fellow clergy who were listening to a talk by The Rev. Father Andrew Southwell of the Latin Mass Society recently in a London club. Apparently, manners were not learnt in Rome. Perhaps that explains his return without the much talked about bishopric. Talked about mainly … Continue reading And he’s been sighted again

SS Gregory & Augustine – restoration and renewal

Having served at SS Gregory & Augustine in north Oxford, and also sung there, both in the extraordinary form and the ordinary form of the Roman Rite, I am sorry that I missed last Sunday’s Mass as served by a friend. The priest in charge, Fr John Saward, has been instrumental in the restoration of his church, particularly by the installation of new paintings by James Gillick. Fr Saward has been one of the many priests in the Oxford area who are happy to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of The Mass using the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite. It … Continue reading SS Gregory & Augustine – restoration and renewal

Abuses in the Oxford Union

For years the Oxford Union has been a bastion of free speech. Its Rules, it has been said, “are more comprehensive than the constitutions of many third world countries.” However, as with other some African the rulers deem themselves to be above the law. The issue in question is the use of laptops of members in the Union Bar. Apparently the bar staff have had issues with Chris Adams on many occasions. He claims that the rule will be changed. But until it is those in authority are flouting rules it is surely a very bad example to those of … Continue reading Abuses in the Oxford Union
