No road signage but plenty of signs of the Ulster Covenant commemoration

This morning I have been walking up what later on will be the Ulster Covenant Centenary Parade route. I’m heading to the capital, Dublin, for the day for a meeting in Molesworth Street. However, one thought particularly struck me as I walked up the Upper Newtownards Road in Belfast. The parade organisers have no signs up telling motorists and others that it is a major parade route. If this were London this would almost certainly have been done. There are signs that it is a parade route—lots of Union Flags flying at half-lamppost! Equal Marriage NI can learn from the US campaign

The fight for equal marriage is being fought right across the globe at the moment. Some people will know that I am happy to be associated with the Equal Marriage NI campaign, and have been helping via Tinsel Box in some related activity by Christians who want Equal Marriage. Always on the look out for inspiration for graphics, we may be able to take some hope from a graphic produced for the campaign in the USA. Have a look at the graphic shown below. LGBT Church of Ireland people have both good will and faith @downandromore @churchofireland #8aNoWay

It is energizing to think of the blessing which is possible in our communities if people of good will and faith work together creatively. – Bishop Harold Miller, Bishop of Down & Dromore I trust that the Lord Bishop of Down & Dromore will remember his own words when introducing the rather unfortunate motions before the General Synod of the Church of Ireland later today. It would be great to believe that Bishop Miller will look forward to working creatively with the LGBT community not just in his diocese but across Ireland. From Down & Dromore there were six members … Continue reading LGBT Church of Ireland people have both good will and faith @downandromore @churchofireland #8aNoWay

Help us all by telling PSNI about those who plant hoax devices

Thankfully the evacuation of Omagh Police Station last night was due to a hoax device. Sadly, even hoax devices can be used to create terror in the lives of our police and of our communities across Northern Ireland. I call on anyone with any information about those who plant hoax devices and real devices to contact the PSNI about this. It is essential that those responsible are brought before the courts for justice. The PSNI can be contacted on 0845 600 8000 for non-emergency reporting. In an emergency do phone 999. Those who try to create terror must not be let to win.

With reports from Chris Lindsay, BBC journalist on NewsLine that Omagh Police station is being evacuated due to a suspicious package, Omagh PSNI station being evacuated due to discovery of suspicious package — Chris Lindsay (@chrislindsay_) May 7, 2012 I sincerely hope and pray that nothing untoward is found. You will be found by the PSNI and brought before the courts. … Continue reading Those who try to create terror must not be let to win.

NUS-USI President calls for university admissions to be after results are published

When I applied to university the first time around, back when I was a pupil at Ballymena Academy, I couldn’t understand why we had to apply based on the results of our predicted grades. It seemed to me, and still does, that it would be fairer to have the university admissions process after real grades  had been awarded. The recent action [inaction?] by UCAS to put off a decision on having post-results admissions has been rightly condemned by the President of NUS-USI, Adrianne Peltz, who said that basing offers on predicted grades is an unreliable system and that going by predicted grades … Continue reading NUS-USI President calls for university admissions to be after results are published
