Building Peace Together – a message from 1998 for today

Yesterday, Northern Ireland lost a brave 25 year old officer of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, when the criminals and terrorists of the past came back to haunt us. Immediately our thoughts and remembrances were of the awful bomb which came after the Belfast Agreement in 1998. Ronan Kerr would have been about 12 when the Omagh bomb exploded in August 1998. As a Scouter, thinking back to 1998, I remember that many Scouts from Northern Ireland travelled to Chile for the 19th World Scout Jamboree in Picarquín. The theme for that event was Building Peace Together  This year … Continue reading Building Peace Together – a message from 1998 for today

The Sun doesn’t recognise Northern Ireland as part of the UK.

Just been registering on The Sun website in order to vote in their poll on the Referendum in May – but have come across a snag. They have just asked me (in order that I can vote): 4. Which of the following is your ITV region? If you receive more than one, which would you say is your main region? Scotland (Including Grampian, Border, Scottish) Tyne Tees (North East) Granada TV (North West) Yorkshire (Yorkshire) Central TV (Wales and West Midlands) Anglia TV (East of England) West Country TV (South West) Meridian (South and South East) Carlton TV/LWT (London and … Continue reading The Sun doesn’t recognise Northern Ireland as part of the UK.

War on Drugs, War on those who shoot dealers

Today we hear from the courts in Londonderry that two men aged 29 and 30 have admitted charges in connection with cocaine. The judge has stated that it is ‘almost inevitable’ that a custodial sentence will be given. However sentence has already been passed and carried out by a grouping called Republican Action Against Drugs. In a civilised society there can be no place for such vigilanteism. We have the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the Courts Service to uphold the law. It is not the place of other criminals and thugs to go out and act as judge, … Continue reading War on Drugs, War on those who shoot dealers

will the Irish FA play teams in Homophobia v Football?

Shirt badge/Association crest

Following sectarian incidents at the Northern Ireland v Scotland match in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin recently, the Irish FA has said that

Information has now come to light which has provided the name of one of those involved. The Association will now seek to confirm the identity of this individual. If their identity is confirmed, the Irish FA will place a life time ban on this person from receiving tickets to all Northern Ireland home and away games.

I reiterate my hope that they will do this for any homophobic chanting at football matches under its control.

Let's hope the Irish FA joins in the International Day against homophobia in football.

Today is 19 February 2011 and is the second international day opposing homophobia in football. Continue reading “will the Irish FA play teams in Homophobia v Football?”

Reforming the marriage law – why not on a UK basis? – Scotland and NI lag behind

Today in LGBT History Month, we have another good news story resulting from the Liberal Democrats forming the coalition government with the Tories in Westminster. Liberal Democrat Minister for Equalities, Lynne Featherstone MP has launched consultation on reforming the marriage and civil partnership laws in the United Kingdom sorry England & Wales in line with the Liberal Democrats Equal Marriage Policy voted on at Party Conference in September. Unfortunately, this will not be done across the UK as a whole which will mean that whilst Lynne is Minister for Equalities she will be putting out consultation on something that will … Continue reading Reforming the marriage law – why not on a UK basis? – Scotland and NI lag behind

it’s not difficult to get the words right

God save the Queen - Dia leis an Bhanríon.

On Accession Day, I thought I’d give a little hand to all the Ulstermen and women who seem to have some confusion about the words of the National Anthem. Continue reading “it’s not difficult to get the words right”
