and the decision is…

It’s been a hard job working out what to do with this blog for me in the past few months. A number of reasons for my quietness on the blog have been in evidence: my law studies; my lack of enthusiasm for the actions of the Parliamentary Party of the Liberal Democrats; my ongoing work with Bedford District Scouts; and HIV Blogger.  However, having thought more and more about whether to retire the blog now or to continue, I have decided to try and get back into the way of blogging. It is unlikely that it will be quite at the … Continue reading and the decision is…

A new era.

Some of my friends may have found that they have been a bit confused in recent days. I’ve been updating my Facebook presence and have taken the decision to deactivate one account and start afresh from another. As I have said in the past, I have been on Facebook since it became available to the United Kingdom through the University of Oxford system and I believe those in Tabland could access it too. Since then, I had built up a huge number of ‘friends’ and whilst I had indeed met most of them, I was rarely in contact with them … Continue reading A new era.

Timely reminder of protesting law by @PSNIBelfast

With all the protests against the democratic decision by Belfast City Council to fly the Union Flag on designated days from Belfast City Hall, the Police Service of Northern Ireland has taken the opportunity to try and educate people about the law regarding protests. Everyone has the right to peacefully protest provided you remain within the law. To remain within the law it is important that you do not block roads or prevent the free flow of vehicle or pedestrian traffic. You should not conceal your identity by covering your face. You must remain peaceful and not use violent or … Continue reading Timely reminder of protesting law by @PSNIBelfast

Insulting?

Who should decide whether words, posters or ideas are insulting? It might surprise you to know that under Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986, the police and the courts can decide if you or someone else might feel insulted. Question for NI? Of course, section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 doesn’t apply in Northern Ireland. As far as I can see, the equivalent is the Public Order (NI) Order 1987, article 9. So should we be starting a campaign to reformarticle9? Continue reading Insulting?

Is St Patrick to be expunged from Union Flag?

Now any observer of flags in Northern Ireland will tell you that there are many variations in the flags that are seen around the Province. But this one, first seen by me on a Facebook page, is a new one even for me. It is placed on a page somewhat dedicated to so-called Loyalism that appears to have sprung up following the decision by Belfast City Council to fly the Union Flag from City Hall on the designated Flag-flying Days. Most of these pages want to see the Union Flag replaced, that is hoisted once more on City Hall, not … Continue reading Is St Patrick to be expunged from Union Flag?

Violence and fire-lighting is not the way forward

My thoughts and prayers are with all Alliance Party representative and their staff at this difficult time following the decision by Belfast City Council to fly the Union Flag on designated days. Reports are coming in this evening that a constituency office for Stewart Dickson MLA, the Alliance representative for East Antrim has been set on fire. According to the BBC the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service are at the scene. As with the protest yesterday that forced Naomi Long MP‘s office to close early, all that these actions will do will be to stop local people from getting … Continue reading Violence and fire-lighting is not the way forward
