Maundy money reporting goes awry at the Beeb.

Once again, the BBC has equated the UK with England…. To mark her Diamond Jubilee, the Queen handed out money to people from all of the UK’s 44 Christian dioceses. – BBC News I think that this should read, from all of the Church of England’s 44 dioceses. There are many more dioceses in the whole of the UK, listing only the Anglican ones you get 19 more: Church of Ireland (Dioceses with territory in N. Ireland) Armagh Clogher Connor Derry Down & Dromore Kilmore, Elphin & Ardagh Scottish Episcopal Church Aberdeen & Orkney Argyll & the Isles Brechin Edinburgh Glasgow … Continue reading Maundy money reporting goes awry at the Beeb.

NUS-USI President calls for university admissions to be after results are published

When I applied to university the first time around, back when I was a pupil at Ballymena Academy, I couldn’t understand why we had to apply based on the results of our predicted grades. It seemed to me, and still does, that it would be fairer to have the university admissions process after real grades  had been awarded. The recent action [inaction?] by UCAS to put off a decision on having post-results admissions has been rightly condemned by the President of NUS-USI, Adrianne Peltz, who said that basing offers on predicted grades is an unreliable system and that going by predicted grades … Continue reading NUS-USI President calls for university admissions to be after results are published

shiny course materials making study difficult

I’ve been annoyed by this problem for some time. This afternoon it just became even more unbearable, perhaps because I have a slight stye affecting my right eye. What is the problem? Well put quite simply it is that the course materials for W100 are printed on paper that is quite glossy and shiny. Even the print appears shiny. This means that, in order, to read the print without shininess, I have to move my head around much more than when reading other books. I suspect that this is done to make the course materials look attractive. Unfortunately, it makes it more difficult to read. It … Continue reading shiny course materials making study difficult

The royal banners forward go…

Vexilla Regis pródeunt: fulget Crucis mystérium, qua Vita mortem pértulit, et morte vitam pértulit. The royal banners forward go, / The Cross shines forth in mystic glow, / Where Life Himself our death endured / And by His death our life procured. Quæ, vulneráta lánceæ mucróne diro, críminum ut nos laváret sórdibus, manávit unda et sánguine. Where deep for us the spear was dyed, / Life’s torrent rushing from His side, /To wash us in that precious flood, / Where mingled water flowed, and blood. Impléta sunt quæ cóncinit David fidéli cármine, dicéndo natiónibus: Regnávit a ligno Deus. Fulfill’d is … Continue reading The royal banners forward go…

Pooh Sticks – the World Championship

I’m not quite sure what makes it the world championship, but apparently it is on today near Oxford. For those of us who don’t remember the rules have been codified… Mike Ridley, owner of ‘Pooh Corner’ in Hartfield, wrote a very nice booklet about this game, including these rules below. This booklet ‘The official Pooh Corner Rules for Playing Poohsticks’ was written in 1996 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the publication of ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’. First, you each select a stick and show it to your fellow competitors. You must agree which stick is which – or whose, as it were. … Continue reading Pooh Sticks – the World Championship

representation in Parliament…

Les Floyd has written a blog about Justice and Compassion mentioning in particular Charlie Gilmour and Gary MacKinnon. However, whilst talking about Charlie Gilmour, he mentions that Mr Gilmour (senior) wrote to his MP, and the MP in question, Francis Maude, was not minded to take a stance. Les continues with, MPs are not masters over their constituents… they are servants. They are voted for and elected by the people, to represent the people, and not just the people who voted for them, not just the people they agree with or like… but everyone in their constituency. I am not … Continue reading representation in Parliament…

Six weeks off

It’s been six weeks since I went to the gym. I’ve been off ‘cos of a nasty chest infection. But hopefully, next week I will get back into the way of things properly. One thing that has improved is that I am starting to eat slightly more sensibly. Yesterday, for instance, I had two portions of fruit, one of pineapple and one of mixed fruit including kiwi, melon, mango, and blueberry. Then for tea I cooked some pork and mashed potato. And I am trying to cut down on caffeine as well. So what is for today? Ah well, tonight … Continue reading Six weeks off
