A time to remember

It is that time of the year when we as a nation remember. I suspect that by the time you read this blog, it will nearly be time for the two minutes’ silence at 11 a.m. GMT, that is the eleventh hour of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, remembering the time when the guns fell silent at the end of the Great War. it’s five o’clock on friday – it’s bell night

It’s Friday and when I was a teenager, Friday night meant bell practice night. We never got to hear Lady Gaga ringing out from the St Patrick’s in Ballymena, even with the new ring of 12 hanging there. We were more used to the gentle sound of the ‘middle six’ and sometimes if we were lucky to hear the sound of the 12 bells being rung. Quarter lost

Tonight saw eight ringers gather at the Church of St Nicholas, Carrickfergus for a Quarter Peal attempt. When I was in England, such events were rather routine, but here in N. Ireland it seems like it is a big event to even attempt such things. We started about five past eight and managed ten minutes, then realised that two bells had crossed in the method.
