Time for Bishop of Down & Dromore to lead by example

In today’s News Letter, the seconder of Saturday’s motion on Human Sexuality in the Context of Christian Belief at the General Synod of the Church of Ireland is reported to have said that  it would be “very helpful” for Dean [Tom] Gordon to now say whether he was in a sexual relationship with his partner. No body has asked Bishop Miller about his sexual practices with his wife. But perhaps we should. If the ‘leading conservative Bishop of the Church’ wants to know about the sex lives of others, he should tell us all about it himself.  Continue reading Time for Bishop of Down & Dromore to lead by example

Another look at the figures from EFIC and @8ANoWay …

Some people have commented to me that the figures represented in my previous post may not be quite as clear to many as I had intended. The average number of signatories per week is rather different between the two petitions, as can be seen from the graph below… So putting the earlier figures in a slightly different way… average of 19.6  signatures per week EFIC Open Letter and Petition average of 147 signatures in 1 week 8A No Way Open Letter and Petition Continue reading Another look at the figures from EFIC and @8ANoWay …

LGBT Church of Ireland people have both good will and faith @downandromore @churchofireland #8aNoWay

It is energizing to think of the blessing which is possible in our communities if people of good will and faith work together creatively. – Bishop Harold Miller, Bishop of Down & Dromore I trust that the Lord Bishop of Down & Dromore will remember his own words when introducing the rather unfortunate motions before the General Synod of the Church of Ireland later today. It would be great to believe that Bishop Miller will look forward to working creatively with the LGBT community not just in his diocese but across Ireland. From Down & Dromore there were six members … Continue reading LGBT Church of Ireland people have both good will and faith @downandromore @churchofireland #8aNoWay

LGBT Churchpeople still not being listened to: #8aNoWay @churchofireland

The final paragraph of Resolution 8A at the General Synod in Dublin this week is the most nasty of all. For it is the one that will legitimise witch-hunts against gay clergy; it is the one that will allow gay people to be excluded from Holy Communion; and it demeans the relationships of remarried divorcees. Maundy money reporting goes awry at the Beeb.

Once again, the BBC has equated the UK with England…. To mark her Diamond Jubilee, the Queen handed out money to people from all of the UK’s 44 Christian dioceses. – BBC News I think that this should read, from all of the Church of England’s 44 dioceses. There are many more dioceses in the whole of the UK, listing only the Anglican ones you get 19 more: Church of Ireland (Dioceses with territory in N. Ireland) Armagh Clogher Connor Derry Down & Dromore Kilmore, Elphin & Ardagh Scottish Episcopal Church Aberdeen & Orkney Argyll & the Isles Brechin Edinburgh Glasgow … Continue reading Maundy money reporting goes awry at the Beeb.

Remember, Remember, the fifth of November… amazingly not in Northern Ireland

Growing up in Northern Ireland with an English mother (I know, we all have crosses to bear) and an Ulsterman as a father leads to some interesting debates about what we celebrate in the house. Around our family home in Ballymena there was a great sense of community when my brothers and I were under ten and most of the local families had children under 18. We used to have a community bonfire around this time of year. You know the sort of thing, one family brings toffee apples, someone else actual toffee, others fudge, others sandwiches, others cups of … Continue reading Remember, Remember, the fifth of November… amazingly not in Northern Ireland
