There’s a knock at the door, it’s the Police… what next?

In the last days and weeks Northern Ireland has been hit by many bomb alerts and security alerts, many of which have turned out to be hoaxes. I doubt that many people living in the rest of the United Kingdom have any idea what this is like. Imagine a family with young children, who are asleep at the time of the alert, being roused by a knock on the door from the Police. Placenames – a sense of history

We have a rich cultural heritage in our placenames in Northern Ireland, but sadly there are far too few times when we see the original language (Gaeilge) in use on public signs. This is probably due to the language being seen to be “Nationalist” and therefore not of interest to the rest of the population. However, I would contend that it is of interest to both those who live here – and those that visit this small part of the world. Why should we just give the names of our towns in English?
