With Belfast City Council voting in favour of equal rights with regard to marriage in the city of Belfast, it was refreshing to read a statement from the Chaplain of Pembroke College, Oxford: Civil Partnerships and Pembroke College Chapel The Governing Body and chaplain are dedicated to the mission of the chapel as fully including the whole college community, past and present, staff, students, and fellows. The Tiber Swim Team?

I’ve a number of tshirts that proclaim all sorts of things about myself on the front or on the back. I was looking for others and came across this one. It is quite appropriate – although some of us have had the image of us paddling across the Tiber with our breviaries held above our heads, and then sitting saying the Office on the other side, with a pile of books to supply everyone with, and a pile of towels for everyone to be dried off. Back in 1844 those who founded the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers would probably be surprised at how wide their ideas have spread. Within ten years of the opening of that first Co-operative shop which sold a very meagre selection of butter, sugar, flour, oatmeal and a few candles and later tea and tobacco there were nearly a thousand co-operatives operating in the Britain. O Sapientia – 17 December

The text of today‘s antiphon is

O Wisdom, who came forth from the mouth of the Most High, reaching from one end to the other, powerfully and sweetly ordering all things: come to teach us the way of prudence.

Jesus, the Word or Wisdom of God, is like a bridge reaching from heaven to earth and from earth to heaven. We are invited to journey towards our Father by stepping on this bridge and following where it leads. Walking this ‘way of prudence’ helps to make the kingdom of God visible in our time. The one who utters the invitation is none less than the Messiah himself.

a worrying sign of things to come…

I was not at the protests in London this week, but having just watched a video on Oxford Spring I am very glad that I was not. It appears that the Mounted Section of the Metropolitan Police charged into the crowd. As Oxford Spring puts it: There is no excuse for this mounted police charge into the crowd. No, it is not on the scale of the Miner’s Strikes or the Peterloo Massacre but it is still grossly disproportionate to what the police officers faced. oxford shows off 16th century ‘video nasty’

I was fortunate to be on a guided tour of the Christ Church Picture Gallery, where my good friend John Whitehead was on duty, yesterday afternoon. Although it was free, and there were plenty of tourists in the city as a result of  St Giles’ Fair, I was the only person on the tour.
