Is St Patrick to be expunged from Union Flag?

Now any observer of flags in Northern Ireland will tell you that there are many variations in the flags that are seen around the Province. But this one, first seen by me on a Facebook page, is a new one even for me. It is placed on a page somewhat dedicated to so-called Loyalism that appears to have sprung up following the decision by Belfast City Council to fly the Union Flag from City Hall on the designated Flag-flying Days. Most of these pages want to see the Union Flag replaced, that is hoisted once more on City Hall, not … Continue reading Is St Patrick to be expunged from Union Flag?

Violence and fire-lighting is not the way forward

My thoughts and prayers are with all Alliance Party representative and their staff at this difficult time following the decision by Belfast City Council to fly the Union Flag on designated days. Reports are coming in this evening that a constituency office for Stewart Dickson MLA, the Alliance representative for East Antrim has been set on fire. According to the BBC the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service are at the scene. As with the protest yesterday that forced Naomi Long MP‘s office to close early, all that these actions will do will be to stop local people from getting … Continue reading Violence and fire-lighting is not the way forward

Help us all by telling PSNI about those who plant hoax devices

Thankfully the evacuation of Omagh Police Station last night was due to a hoax device. Sadly, even hoax devices can be used to create terror in the lives of our police and of our communities across Northern Ireland. I call on anyone with any information about those who plant hoax devices and real devices to contact the PSNI about this. It is essential that those responsible are brought before the courts for justice. The PSNI can be contacted on 0845 600 8000 for non-emergency reporting. In an emergency do phone 999. police officers – remembering those who serve all of us

We often hear of the numbers of police being cut, and of what the police are being asked to do by the Government as well as the public. But how often do we hear about it from the policeman’s own view. Minimum Cover is one way for us to do so. I’ve just read the latest post having been pointed there on Facebook by a Scouting friend. He looked straight at me through the smoke….mouthing words that had no sound…and then there was silence. So often our policemen and women face situations that most of us never want to see, … Continue reading police officers – remembering those who serve all of us

I will be attending the assembly at Belfast City Hall at 1pm on Wednesday 6th April 2011 to show my abhorrence of the murder of PSNI Constable Ronan Kerr. The assembly is being organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions Northern Ireland. I urge all members of the public to attend and let us all stand firm to show those responsible for Saturday’s atrocity and the many recent and ongoing security alerts across Northern Ireland that they are acting not in our name. Letter from Peter Bunting, Acting General Secretary, ICTU NI Dear Colleagues Following the brutal murder of … Continue reading gather for peace, democracy and justice

Questionable parking from a police constable in Belfast – blocking entrance to a church car park with fewer than ten minutes to go before the Sunday morning service was due. Surely there are more places to park? Continue reading PSNI block entrance to All Souls’ Church: to go to Starbucks!

blue, yellow, and red: but not parking in Bucharest

Badge Holders * may usually park on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours except where there is a ban on loading or unloading and at a few locations where local schemes apply. A guide for Blue Badge holders published by Roads Service, 2003 Blue Badges: Park where you like It seems that there are some rules which are unenforceable in those parts of Northern Ireland that are not in the Greater Belfast area. Those of us who are lucky enough to be deemed not to need a blue badge may not know all the rules for … Continue reading blue, yellow, and red: but not parking in Bucharest
