results and more tests…

It’s only two weeks since I was up at the HIV clinic at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. That appointment was an emergency one due to the somewhat awful cough and chest infection from which I was suffering at the time. The news back then was that the results from May’s blood tests were very encouraging:

CD4 = 190 (9%)
VL = undetectable

Well, today I had the results of the tests on the blood taken two weeks ago. Whilst the CD4 count is down numerically to 140, the percentage is the same at 9%. This was not entirely unexpected as my body was fighting the chest infection at the time. Viral Load was once again undetectable.

My consultant, Dr Carol Emerson, reckoned that this was all down to a certain Andrew. Continue reading “results and more tests…”

1, 2, 3, and an apology

Up to the Royal Victoria Hospital again this afternoon for my, now standard, weekly check up. First the results: Viral Load 5 October 2010 – 250 21 October 2010 – 1,100 11 November 2010 – 8300 CD4 count Don’t have dates but it is 110 and 6% – so that is all much of a muchness. What these results mean For those of you who have been reading this blog since the beginning, this will be obviously not the best thing at all. With the viral load rising, and me taking the anti-retrovirals it seems that some drug has failed. … Continue reading 1, 2, 3, and an apology

Another week, more treatment, lots of support

It’s another week, and I’ve not had anything put up on this blog for ages, but it’s not because nothing has been happening – quite the opposite in fact. Life has been moving on. I have been working away and getting on with various things. However, last weekend I felt a bump on the back of my neck, and on Thursday I fought through the rain, gale force winds and awful traffic to make it up to the Gay Men’s clinic at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. I thought it was probably a recurrence of the now dreaded PVL-MRSA … Continue reading Another week, more treatment, lots of support

July 21

Good news finally today. I was up at the HIV Clinic once more today and found out that there was really good news. My Viral Load count has come down. In fact it is now so low that it is undetectable. In the words of another friend who also got this result a couple of weeks ago. ” I may have to celebrate. “ Although this is good news, this doesn’t totally stop the feelings of depression and lack of motivation that are still floating around in my head. More good news is that I am becoming better at taking … Continue reading July 21

St Etheldreda’s Day Today is St Etheldreda’s Day. The day that the Church remembers a holy Abbess in Ely, Cambridgeshire. It is the day I remember a friend of mine called Etheldreda. And remember that I have forgotten to send a card to her – I’ll have to do that later this afternoon. Hospital Clinic Last month when I was given the date for today’s appointment I mentioned that it was St Etheldreda’s day and the doctor looked at me a bit funny. I’m rather good with dates – name a day and I’ll probably be able to know what … Continue reading June 23

Day 16

Well, yesterday I was up at the clinic with moral support from a friend. So first of all a word of thanks to him. Counts CD4 = 100 Viral Load= 29k An explanation of these terms is given below. CD4 and viral load tests Together these tests give a good indication of what’s going on with our HIV. CD4 test Knowing how many CD4 cells we’ve got in a sample of our blood is a guide to how healthy our immune system is.  Normal CD4 count A healthy adult man has a CD4 count of between 400 to 1600 CD4 cells … Continue reading Day 16
