Assembly committee wants townland names in official addresses!

Townlands in our addresses

It seems that the Culture, arts and leisure committee at Stormont is managing to tackle real issues. Today there is a call from the Committee to use townland names in postal addresses. They are saying that the address for the Northern Ireland Assembly would now be:

Stormont Estate, Ballymiscaw, Belfast

However, whilst Parliament Buildings does indeed lie in the townland of Ballymiscaw, the main gate on the Upper Newtownards Road does not. It is in the townland of Ballycloghan. The Massey Avenue Gate is more complicated as it is on the boundary of two townlands, Killeen in the civil parish of Holywood / Ard Mhic Nasca and Killeen in the civil parish of Dundonald / Dún Dónaill and half way up towards the statue of Carson you move into the townland of Ballymiscaw. It seems that when the site was chosen, townlands were not thought of!

Still it is good to see that our lawmakers are recommending the use of our townland names – even if they are only in English. When do we get to have them in Irish in our official addresses too?
