Finanance – the new word on education

Okay, normally you would not expect to find a miss-spelt word on Gyronny Herald, but today you do. That word is

Finanance

The quotation comes from the headline on one page of the Ulster Unionist website, as shown below…

SPG only gains the UUP 3/5 marks this time.

For those who can’t see the picture:

Finanance Debate seconded by Leslie Cree

07/12/2010

Leslie CreeLet us be under no illusion, Northern Ireland is facing extremely challenging fiscal and economic times.

The main driver in our economic growth in recent decades has been year on year increases in public spending, funded mainly by the Treasury.

We now face the double hit of this spending being considerably reduced in the middle of an ongoing slump in our private sector.

The Executive is set to face a reduction in spending of £1.4 billion. However, when we calculate in real inflation, not generous Treasury estimations, the figure will be much more.

The gap between the downward trajectory in spending and what had generally been anticipated is substantial. This will have an impact on jobs, public services and our economic future.

Families and individuals are concerned.

They are worrying about jobs, health and education – it is our job to create new options for the Executive and private sector.

Perhaps Ulster’s former leading party means

Finance

“they are worrying about jobs, health and education”

Indeed people are worrying about jobs, health, and education. But I am beginning to worry about the education of some members of staff [N.B. Not on this occasion the education of Leslie Cree, MLA for North Down] in the UUP. If “Finanance” really is the best that the UUP staffers (educated by the Northern Irish education system) can come up with – even with the assistance of spell checkers in many word processing and web content management systems – then heaven help us!
