music videos and running away

Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat

I’d never watched this video before this evening. Music videos were not something that were encouraged when I was growing up, and I suspect that this particular one would have been seen as provocative.

Still, it saddens me to think that there are still gay boys that have to run away from home in order to live freely as themselves. Why parents and others cannot let their children live as they need to in order to be truly free, I don’t think I shall ever understand.

I’m sure some people will think that I ran away from Ballymena to Belfast – and in some sense I did. But it wasn’t to enable me to live my life as a gay man, it was to enable me to live my life as an adult.
Still, thanks to Gerry Lynch for sharing this on facebook – and once again making me think.

    1. Didn’t see music videos when I was younger – as we were at choir practice when Top of the Pops was on. And I don’t think Mum really approved of them.

  1. Its ironic that in our house, music was not frowned upon…….we always got to see top of the pops…..and listen to ‘popular music’

despite the very very conservative church influence
