In recent weeks, I’ve started on a new adventure within Scouting. I was elected Chairman of FLAGS,
which actively supports the recruitment, retention and ongoing support of LGBT adults within Scouting in the UK.
This is an ongoing challenge, but with the assistance of other members of FLAGS, commissioners and leaders up and down the UK, together with help from UK Headquarters based at Gilwell Park, I know that we will be
Doing Our Best to Be Prepared to be Of Service.
It’s not just me that has taken on a new role within Scouting, in the last couple of years we have had the pleasure of having Bear Grylls take on the role of Chief Scout. He has been inspiring to all who have met him in this role. I know that many of us look up to him for inspiration.
I’ve been a Scout practically my whole life: in fact it would have been difficult to have not been involved. After all, my mother has been a leader in our sister organisation GirlGuiding UK for many years, my father was a Scout, and both my grandfathers were Scouters too. Some would say that it was in the blood. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time both as a young person and an adult. It’s all about helping young people fulfil their potential.
Perhaps now is the time for you to have a go yoruself?
Have you got skills that can be passed on to local young people? Have you got some time on your hands? With the flexible volunteering scheme that has been highlighted across the country you may not have to commit to 2 hours on a Friday evening every week. There are plenty of opportunities.
