So last night, I was at the gym again… nothing surprising in that really. But today I am definitely feeling the pain.
Instead of Andrew coming with me as before, on this occasion I went with him. This meant that we both benefited from the experience of his trainer, Gordy. Now, Gordy has been through the last year with Andrew, which means that he has heard all about me not being well and so it seems he was quite prepared to keep more of an eye on me than on Andrew except when we were doing individual tasks when we were both taken care of very well.
We started with a short blast as a warm up on the cross trainers, then we moved onto lifting some weights working on our triceps, then our biceps, and many other muscles that I am not good enough to remember. Perhaps I should take a machine to record all this at the time.
I had my first experience of many machines last night – the treadmill was one of them. Unfortunately Gordy started me off at a pace that I can only describe as slower than slow march. This made life very difficult so I upped the speed, and then he upped the incline. So although it is not terribly fast, I was told to set this in the future: incline 5.0, speed 6.5. The units seem not to be present, so who knows what that means.
One other machine, the Low Row had me actually lifting the same weights as Andrew, this was the penultimate machine of the night, and I was finally keeping pace with him.
Today has been an interesting day, where my arms ache from the activity last night. I’m not going to give up on the gym, if anything the aches make me want to go back for more, so that my body is ready to tackle more challenges in the future. But with quite a lot on in my life, it will not be until next week that I will actually make it. I think we are heading for a Spin class on Tuesday evening. Then next Wednesday, we have a session with Gordy. I’m actually quite looking forward to going back… The fact that Gordy is, um, quite fit has nothing at all to do with the process. Nothing. At all.
