And he’s been sighted again

Older readers will remember the posting about the elevation of a certain humble priest in the Eternal city to being a Monsignor (News from Oxford). Correspondents from England have informed me of the return to England of this well known cleric. It is said that his return has not been unnoticed by some of his fellow clergy who were listening to a talk by The Rev. Father Andrew Southwell of the Latin Mass Society recently in a London club. Apparently, manners were not learnt in Rome. Perhaps that explains his return without the much talked about bishopric. Talked about mainly … Continue reading And he’s been sighted again

SS Gregory & Augustine – restoration and renewal

Having served at SS Gregory & Augustine in north Oxford, and also sung there, both in the extraordinary form and the ordinary form of the Roman Rite, I am sorry that I missed last Sunday’s Mass as served by a friend. The priest in charge, Fr John Saward, has been instrumental in the restoration of his church, particularly by the installation of new paintings by James Gillick. Fr Saward has been one of the many priests in the Oxford area who are happy to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of The Mass using the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite. It … Continue reading SS Gregory & Augustine – restoration and renewal

Pray for Ireland’s senior Cardinal

As news is breaking that Ireland’s most senior Cardinal is seriously ill in hospital, let us pray that His Eminence Cahal, Cardinal Daly gets well soon. His Eminence, formerly Lord Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All-Ireland (having been translated there in 1990 from Down & Connor, and to there from Ardagh and Clonmacnoise in 1982 where he would have known the Longford Cathedral now gutted) retired in 1996 and was succeeded by His Eminence Seán, Cardinal Brady. Our Lady, Queen of Ireland, pray for him. St Patrick, Patron of Ireland, pray for him. St Malachy of Armagh, pray for … Continue reading Pray for Ireland’s senior Cardinal

Even on Christmas Day, the attacks on The Church continue…

The Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord is the day when we remember the coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ as the child of Our Lady and St Joseph in Bethlehem. It is the day that we give thanks for the bringing down to earth from heaven the “Word made Flesh”. Attack on the Church in Ireland It is very sad to hear that in the early hours of this morning, the Cathedral Church of St Mel in Longford, Ireland, was gutted by fire. The Most Reverend Dr Colm O’Reilly, Lord Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise had celebrated Midnight … Continue reading Even on Christmas Day, the attacks on The Church continue…

St Patrick’s College damaged by fire

Six a.m. in Belfast is like six a.m. in most cities, some people are getting up to go to work, others lying-on in their beds, others already at work. But Belfast of course is slightly different. Belfast has people out throwing petrol bombs. Take this morning, for instance, the Fire and Rescue Service and the Police were called to St Patrick’s College Bearnageeha on the Antrim Road in the north of the city following reports of a fire. Fortunately they found that the fire had burnt itself out. But what had happened? Someone thought that it would be a good … Continue reading St Patrick’s College damaged by fire

News from Oxford

Gyronny has heard from his source in Oxford that the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales has lost its chairman and chaplain. The  loss of Julian Chadwick and the Rev. Msgr Anthony Conlon from its ranks is to be lamented. They both contributed plenty over the last few years to the society. Further information can be found on Damian Thompson’s blog (of The Daily Telegraph).  Further news from the city of the dreaming spires is that in the Eternal City, a certain humble priest of the Archdiocese of Westminster is to be made a Monsignor. The exact rank is not … Continue reading News from Oxford
