oxford shows off 16th century ‘video nasty’

I was fortunate to be on a guided tour of the Christ Church Picture Gallery, where my good friend John Whitehead was on duty, yesterday afternoon. Although it was free, and there were plenty of tourists in the city as a result of  St Giles’ Fair, I was the only person on the tour. This made for a very interesting afternoon, hearing about all sorts of paintings, and seeing some particularly gruesome images. Continue reading “oxford shows off 16th century ‘video nasty’”

it’s five o’clock on friday – it’s bell night

It’s Friday and when I was a teenager, Friday night meant bell practice night. We never got to hear Lady Gaga ringing out from the St Patrick’s in Ballymena, even with the new ring of 12 hanging there. We were more used to the gentle sound of the ‘middle six’ and sometimes if we were lucky to hear the sound of the 12 bells being rung. It is always a pleasure to hear the bells of St Patrick’s ringing out, the pleasure is now tinged with sadness at the illfeeling that was created when FODS toured Northern Ireland and one … Continue reading it’s five o’clock on friday – it’s bell night

love between two persons… is to be treasured and respected

The word ‘love’ must never be thought of as synonymous with the word ‘sex’. Love can take many forms…love between two persons, whether of the same sex or of a different sex, is to be treasured and respected. - Dom Basil, Cardinal Hume 1923 - 1999

It’s funny what you find on the internet about yourself…

This morning when I was surfing, I found two disturbing threads on two particularly disturbing forums. One was really a repost of the other.

To quote someone hiding behind the name of “Credo”, on one of the sites

and

the full text of the posts can be found here

and also on this site posted by someone called Seosamh here… (warning only click if you really want to – it does not make for pleasant reading) Continue reading “love between two persons… is to be treasured and respected”

bank card saga – part two

Yesterday my replacement bank card for my principal ℀ was delivered by Royal Mail. This evening I went to my own branch of the aforesaid bank, in Belfast, to check the balance on my ℀. Simple enough, one would have thought. Sadly, I am now without a bank card once more as the ATM swallowed it for unauthorised use So, once more I telephoned the card protection hotline and have been informed that they will try to get it out to me in time for my trip to England, but they suspect that it will not arrive in time. So, … Continue reading bank card saga – part two

10 reasons why gay marriage is wrong

I found this on Facebook and thought that it should be posted here

  1. Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.
  2. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
  3. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.
  4. Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn’t changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can’t marry whites, and divorce is still illegal. Continue reading “10 reasons why gay marriage is wrong”

authors take fight to hunt

When inviting people to Belfast Liberal Drinks yesterday, I didn’t know what people’s reaction would be. Following correspondence from one member, I have learnt more about PLR than I ever knew before. To be honest, I had not really thought about how authors would be compensated for their books being borrowed from libraries.

irish families travelled to see Pope already

Next month, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI will make an historic state visit to the United Kingdom. Reports abound that the visit will be undersubscribed. However several families from Ireland have travelled to Birmingham to be close to the Beatification. These families have set up a camp near to the site and are from the Irish Traveller community. #operationevacuate results in letter to chief constable

After the events of Sunday 22 August 2010, "there were a number of issues with this that we are raising as a result." (Stephen Glenn)

Well, the tale has been told by fellow #operationevacuate operative, Stephen Glenn, of what happened on our return from Bathgate to Belfast at the weekend.

My letter to the chief constable of Dumfries & Galloway, Patrick Shearer QPM has now been posted. Continue reading “#operationevacuate results in letter to chief constable”

better the cards are not out in the wild on their own…

It is now early evening and I am beginning to piece together what happened in the last 24 hours. The first I knew that something funny had gone on, was that I didn’t wake up til about 2pm today. This is not normal for me. Secondly, after an appointment at the Royal Victoria Hospital, I listened to a voicemail on my mobile telephonic device. Apparently I had reported my bank cards lost – yet I knew them to be in my pocket in my wallet. What was going on? I rang the card protection people and found out that this … Continue reading better the cards are not out in the wild on their own…
