Gay blood ban lifted by Sinn Féin Minister for Health

With a new Northern Ireland Executive in office at Stormont following the recent election, it was hardly a surprise that there would be policy changes forthcoming. The new Health Minister, Sinn Féin’s Michelle O’Neill has taken a bold step and reversed the former policy … Continue reading Gay blood ban lifted by Sinn Féin Minister for Health

‘I loved him. He was my son.’ A mother’s love for her gay son honoured 40 years later.

In 1972, Morty was punched, kicked and thrown down an escalator during a gay rights protest at the New York City Hilton Hotel. Watching the attacks on the evening TV news was Morty’s mother Jeanne Manford. She was outraged that police officers appeared to ignore the assault. Following this Jeanne wrote a letter to the New York Post, with one sentence that jumped out. “My son is a homosexual and I love him.” Tom Owens writes: Manford’s son invited her to march with him in the Christopher Street Liberation Day March in June 1972. She agreed, accompanying him to the parade … Continue reading ‘I loved him. He was my son.’ A mother’s love for her gay son honoured 40 years later.

Stonewall, #equalmarriageni, and trading names – a reminder about #moreBS

So Stonewall is now campaigning for Equal Marriage – according to the feed on Twitter and its website. But let’s be honest, this wasn’t always the case: Stonewall initially refused to change their position or engage with critics and even appeared to argue that marriage equality would be too expensive. However, shortly before a planned demonstration by marriage equality campaigners was due to take place outside the 2010 Stonewall Awards, Stonewall announced that they would campaign for same-sex marriage. (whythesilencestonewall.wordpress.com) Stonewall keeps telling us that it is working for LGBT equality across the UK. Indeed, its name on Twitter suggests … Continue reading Stonewall, #equalmarriageni, and trading names – a reminder about #moreBS

LGBT Church of Ireland people have both good will and faith @downandromore @churchofireland #8aNoWay

It is energizing to think of the blessing which is possible in our communities if people of good will and faith work together creatively. – Bishop Harold Miller, Bishop of Down & Dromore I trust that the Lord Bishop of Down & Dromore will remember his own words when introducing the rather unfortunate motions before the General Synod of the Church of Ireland later today. It would be great to believe that Bishop Miller will look forward to working creatively with the LGBT community not just in his diocese but across Ireland. From Down & Dromore there were six members … Continue reading LGBT Church of Ireland people have both good will and faith @downandromore @churchofireland #8aNoWay

LGBT Churchpeople still not being listened to: #8aNoWay @churchofireland

The final paragraph of Resolution 8A at the General Synod in Dublin this week is the most nasty of all. For it is the one that will legitimise witch-hunts against gay clergy; it is the one that will allow gay people to be excluded from Holy Communion; and it demeans the relationships of remarried divorcees. Does Harold Miller also support marital rape?

I am surprised that it has taken so long for the horrible truth to be exposed to us here in Ireland about the man the evangelicals of the Anglican Church in the Provinces of Armagh and Dublin seem to hold as a supporter. That man is a rather radical cleric in the Province of Canterbury. Thanks to Gerry Lynch, the support given by this cleric to some rather unsavoury views expounded by a well known fundamentalist has been made clear for all to see. It is more than slightly disturbing to read that the radical cleric is a bishop of … Continue reading Does Harold Miller also support marital rape?
