A parish for your area: what a good idea @davethemayor

I always take an interest in the places that I visit, and Bedford is no different. I’ve been interested in the town since first I visited in October, and I hope that I will not be a stranger to it in the future. I know that FLAGS has a camp planned for Diamond Jubilee weekend next year and we hope to have it somewhere close to Bedford.

As readers will be aware, the local directly-elected Mayor, Dave Hodgson, has come in for some criticism from me. However, when reading his website this morning, I noticed one plan with which I can agree.

Since I became Mayor clearly we have sought to devolve power away from Borough Hall and to local communities. Local communities know what is best for their areas. However, across most of Bedford there is no elected, formal body to which we can give away real powers and responsibilities. I want local residents across Bedford Borough to have the most say possible about what happens in their area. – Dave Hodgson

I hope that the people of the town of Bedford will all sign his petition and answer the consultation survey on the Borough’s website. I’m sure that a new Bedford Parish Council would strongly support their Civic Theatre!

Bedfordshire on Sunday article on the closure of Civic Theatre by @davethemayor

The local Sunday paper has a good article on the issue and I hope that many more people will contact County Borough Hall prior to the planning committee meeting on November 28th. I hope that there will still be a Civic Theatre for a future Parish Council to take an interest in by the time that such a body would be set up.
