HM Government supports ban on Irish in court

Throughout the United Kingdom there are many different languages being used daily. In some parts of the Kingdom, native languages are allowed to be used in the Courts but here in Belfast this is not allowed. In Wales you could speak Cymraeg (Welsh) and in Scotland it is possible to use Gàidhlig (Scots Gaelic), but here in Northern Ireland it is impossible to use Gaeilge (Irish).

What is the reason?

Put simply it is the Administration of Justice (Language) Act (Ireland) 1737. Or is it as simple as that? Continue reading “HM Government supports ban on Irish in court”

Meds issues – a follow up I’ve taken the pills again today. With my lunch. I’m going to try and keep to this régime this time, and have set up alerts on my phone, and my watch and all sorts to remind me. I just hope that the side effects do not restart. Comment on November 17 post In response to comment on November 17 post… I am trying to learn to take the meds – but I really do feel much better when I am not on them. I appreciate that there are many people throughout the world that … Continue reading November 19

The Queen in Parliament – State Opening Day

The Fifteenth Parliament of the United Kingdom in the Reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has been opened by The Queen in the Palace of Westminster

Today we see the the full splendour of the three part of the Parliament of the United Kingdom in one place: The Sovereign, The House of Lords, The House of Commons. The colour of the State Opening is provided by the uniforms of the many members of HM Household on duty, together with the members of the Army on duty.

I thought I would have a look at what the papers are saying about the Queen’s Speech. Continue reading “The Queen in Parliament – State Opening Day”

Shore Road Cooperative to close

This morning standing at the bus stop on the way into Belfast city centre, I learnt that my neighbourhood Cooperative store is to close on 28 November. What is not clear is whether the Post Office that is located in it is to be relocated or is to close as well. The signs that are in the shop are big enough to be read from the other side of the road and this prompted a discussion at the bus stop. The three of us waiting reckoned that this was a sad day for the Mountcollyer/York Road/Shore Road area of the … Continue reading Shore Road Cooperative to close

October 8 – St Thérèse of Lisieux

St Thérèse of Lisieux Today the Relics of St Thérèse of Lisieux sometimes known as “The Little Flower” are being venerated in the Oratory Church of St Aloysius Gonzaga in the University City of Oxford. To those who of my friends who are in Oxford, I ask that they pray for me, and ask St Thérèse to pray for me to have the courage to face the difficulties that my diagnosis have placed upon me. To quote one priest friend I asked to pray for me while she is in the Oratory… You will indeed be given the courage and … Continue reading October 8 – St Thérèse of Lisieux

August 29 – feast of the Beheading of St John Baptist

Well I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. I was out with a new mate. One that I thought might lead to something more. One problem : he’s negative. In the middle of a night out I ended up telling him about my status. K-‘s been relatively okay about this. But it highlights to me the problem in being interested in men that aren’t known to be positive. When is the time to tell them? How can the virus be passed on? Is kissing wrong? Should I resign myself to being single for ever? Perhaps that would be simpler. … Continue reading August 29 – feast of the Beheading of St John Baptist

It’s some time since I have posted on here. But the events of last night really do need recorded. Five Hours of a Meeting I was at a meeting last night which lasted five hours – but it was reasonably productive depsite starting to cover ground that is not this year’s committee’s responsibility. Then two of us decided that it would be a good idea to head for a pint. Everything goes awry OK, so I shouldn’t be drinking alcohol whilst taking Citalopram, but I was planning only to have one pint. I say planning, because as with all best … Continue reading August 28

August 26

It is now five months since I was diagnosed with HIV. What an anniversary! Had a reasonably good week thus far – but still feeling tired. Out with a friend last night for tea and again with another friend tonight. At least this saves me the problems of cooking. But waiting on money to actually reach my bank account is driving me nuts! Maybe I’ll get paid on Friday somehow. Hoping that the aches and pains start to go away – but there is no sign of that. And house tidy is still needed. But kind of need money for … Continue reading August 26

I’d expect more from those at sea…

Vexillogical stupidities once more Once again I’ve come across some stupidities regarding flag etiquette. In my experience, those who are sailors are usually among the best concerning flag use. But with the Tall Ships Maritime Festival on in Belfast at the moment, this has proved not to be the case. Wrong courtesy flag It is usual for vessels when in a foreign port to fly a ‘courtesy ensign‘ — that is the ensign of the port in which they are. In the United Kingdom that ensign should be the Red Ensign. Unfortunately some of the Tall Ships’ captains appear to … Continue reading I’d expect more from those at sea…
