ex malo bonum – perhaps st augustine was correct…

Today when we hear that the last American combat troops leave Iraq, it is somewhat appropriate that the United Nations is holding World Humanitarian Day which was instituted by the General Assembly of the United Nations to

contribute to increasing public awareness about humanitarian work and the importance of international cooperation, and to commemorate all humanitarian and United Nations and associated personnel who have worked in the promotion of humantiarian cause, and those who have lost their lives in the course of duty. July 18

Okay, so it has been an age since last I posted. But I’ve been busy. A few weeks ago, I was heading up to the clinic every week for tests as my levels were going all over the show. Have to head up again this week to see what is going on, and hope that all is well. However, I am not sure that it really is well. I appear to be losing weight – at least I am getting noticeably slimmer as my jeans are now too large… Sitting down is a challenge at present  – I think I … Continue reading July 18

A strange new world: Tory/LibDem coalition takes office as HM Government in the United Kingdom

And so a new chapter has opened in the history of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Last night, Her Majesty The Queen invited The Right Honourable David Cameron MP, Leader of the Conservative Party to form a government following the resignation of The Right Honourable Gordon Brown MP as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury. At the time it was not know whether Mr Cameron would form a minority government or a coalition with the Liberal Democrats. Of course, since then we have learnt that it is the first coalition government at Westminster for … Continue reading A strange new world: Tory/LibDem coalition takes office as HM Government in the United Kingdom

differing time zones in the UK?

It’s coming round to that time of year when our clocks spring forward to British Summer Time or rather GMT+1. But should there be differing time zones within the UK? Some campaigners are looking for the South West (at least) to be on SDST – that is Single/Double Summer Time or rather GMT+1 in Winter and GMT+2 in Summer. Now in Scotland and probably Northern Ireland this really wouldn’t work – it would be far too dark to get up in the mornings. Take today for instance – sunrise will be at 06.26 in Ballymena (according to the Met Office … Continue reading differing time zones in the UK?

All was not lost in Longford

Readers will remember the fire in Longford Cathedral on Christmas Day that was gutted the building and the diocese’s museum. However, all was not lost. According to the Irish Times, some 200 artefacts from the cathedral have been recovered and saved. The two finest examples of stained glass windows by Harry Clark Studios can be repaired and the windows in the cathedral can be copied, the bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise Dr Colm O’Reilly told a meeting at the weekend of the Longford Association in London. Among the artefacts that were feared lost in the fire but are recoverable include … Continue reading All was not lost in Longford

February 14th

St Valentine’s Day A mate texted yesterday and I realised quite how much I don’t like Saint Valentine’s Day – or as it is often seen nowadays, plain old Valentine’s Day. I think it has something to do with the not being able to get on with a relationship either without telling the guy about my status – or after telling him. It’s been quite a while since last I posted here. Not a lot has changed, other than I missed an appointment at the clinic, so the next available one was practically 2 months afterwards. So that is on … Continue reading February 14th

When is a £1 coin not a £1 coin… better check with the Royal Mint!

Although we are into the year of our Salvation Two Thousand and Ten, here in Belfast it seems that coin of the realm from the year 2008 is only now making its way into our pockets, and from our pockets into the palms of shopkeepers throughout the city. It seems usual for Northern Ireland to be one of the last parts of the United Kingdom to get the new coins of each year, however, with the change in the design of the coins in 2008, Belfast retailers are now rejecting actual coin of the realm. Why? Because the Police Service … Continue reading When is a £1 coin not a £1 coin… better check with the Royal Mint!

December 25 – Christmas Day

It is just after midnight, I am not out at Midnight Mass, but I am watching it on BBC1 from the Metropolitan and Cathedral Church of the Most Precious Blood, Westminster. The Mass is being celebrated  by The Most Reverend Vincent, His Grace the Archbishop of Westminster. The music is uplifting, I just wish that I were singing the introits and the chants as I have done in the past. I hope that this year, I shall renew my faith in the child that came down from heaven, born of Our Blessed Lady, in that stable in the City of … Continue reading December 25 – Christmas Day

2 people in NI diagnosed every week with HIV: what we must do to stop this…
